1959, Albert Fratellini This portrait of the famous Italian clown was on the cover of the 31st Gala of the Artists’ Union catalogue. Lino-etching technique favours overdone caricature, which is the very essence of a clown’s part. Sketchy features, with the large spot of the nose and the black shock of hair contrasting with the white round the mouth and eyes, come to life through the ambiguous eyes staring at us which may express either cheerfulness or sadness.
