1954, Buste Moteur par Jacques Mennessons

1954, Buste Moteur
Stic B sur Papier - Collection particulière

On his return from Provence, Mennessons, who had visited the galleries of Alamanic Switzerland, immediately recovered in this canvas painted with a B stic (a paint made of egg and casein) the strictness and humour of a 1947 self-portrait. The cylinder-shaped breast, the staircase-like face, the hair being suggested by a black and blue solid mass, are devoid of the lasciviousness a female bust usually suggests. The prevailing colours are cold: green, blue, white and the yellow hardly brings any warmth. However the latter is essential to the dynamism of this bust which revolves like a good engine. Humour gives some ambiguity to the work: are we in the world of human beings or in a world of machines ?
